Job Title: Clinical Anaesthetist
Reporting to: Center Manager
Probationary Period: 3 months

This is a key role in our centres. 
Reporting to the MSK Center Manager, this role plays an important part in effective clinical teamwork and is responsible for high quality frontline service delivery to our clients. 
S/he must provide fast, efficient, professionally accurate services that meet and exceed our minimum quality standards for safe abortion, family planning and counselling services. 
S/he must actively take steps to highlight clinical issues arising in relation to all standards and performance. 
Marie Stopes Centres are a vital part of MSK’s work in Kenya. As part of the Programme Operations, they provide a unique service to the clients that visit and use our services. It is a discreet, efficient, high quality service at a reasonable price.

The primary responsibility of this role is to further our Goal: THE PREVENTION OF UNWANTED BIRTHS and its mission of ensuring the individuals right to: CHILDREN BY CHOICE NOT CHANCE

Efficient and effective service delivery in the full range of Marie Stopes services
 
Activities include:   
Client treatment:
  • Administer anaesthetic or sedation during medical procedures, using local, intravenous, spinal, or caudal methods.
  • Monitor patient before, during, and after anaesthesia and counteract adverse reactions or complications.   
  • Provide and maintain life support and airway management and help prepare patients for emergency surgery.
  • Examine patient, obtain medical history, and use diagnostic tests to determine risk during surgical, obstetrical, and other medical procedures.
  • Position  patient  on  operating  table  to  maximize  patient  comfort  and  surgical accessibility.   
  • Decide when patients have recovered or stabilized enough to be sent to another room or ward or to be sent home following outpatient surgery.
  • Coordinate administration of anaesthetics with surgeons during operation.
  • Confer with other medical professionals to determine type and method of anaesthetic or sedation to render patient insensible to pain.
  • Coordinate and direct work of nurses, medical technicians, and other health care providers.
  • Diagnose illnesses, using examinations, tests, and reports.
  • Manage anaesthesia related services, coordinating them with other medical activities and formulating plans and procedures.
  • Provide medical care and consultation in many settings, prescribing medication and treatment and referring patients for surgery.
  • Based on client history, examination, lab test reports and findings and above all client needs, prescribe appropriate drugs
  • Perform appropriate procedures (including Intravenous Therapy, implant insertion, IUD insertion, Pap Smear, MVA procedure)
  • Ensure responsible follow up and treatment of complications. Avoid polypharmacy or any practice that may bring MSK into disrepute.
  • Follow the Kenyan Clinical Guidelines for appropriate management of most conditions and illnesses and also MSK approved guidelines
  • Conduct follow ups and reports all complications in writing within or before the end of current duty.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all levels
  • Provide  comprehensive  client  counselling  on  reproductive  health,  contraceptive options, anaesthetic procedures and other services.
  • Ensure all clients are treated with sensitivity, respect, and consideration. If complaints are raised, to be able to effectively manage and resolve them and to promptly refer to the Team Leader if the client complaint continues or is of a serious magnitude.
  • Implement a smooth, efficient client flow to minimise client waiting times.
  • Monitor and evaluate client care continuously and recommend improvements as necessary.

Management and accurate documentation of all services rendered
Activities include:
  • Accurate client records are maintained in both the theatre records and also CLIC
  • All client information is kept confidential at all times and stored appropriately.
  • Accurate and timely collation of activity data for internal and external reporting purposes.
  • Assist in the collection of client feedback data
  • Refer clients promptly when needed.

Professional Conduct and Ethics               
  • All clinical care must be provided in accordance with the highest standards of clinical care and safety.
  • You must observe high standards of personal grooming and general hygiene and ensure your appearance is neat & tidy at all times whilst on duty.
  • You are expected to wear the Marie Stopes Kenya uniform.
  • You are expected to act professionally at all times, maintaining excellent client-focussed care especially when circumstances are challenging
  • You are expected to act with financial integrity at all time. Marie Stopes Kenya has a zero-tolerance approach to fraudulent activities, including siphoning of clients for personal financial gain.
Knowledge, skills and attitudes
 
Qualifications:
  • Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery or nursing from a recognized medical training college, with higher diploma in Anaesthesia  a must
  • Registered by the Kenya Clinical Officers Council and in possession a valid practice license.
  • Practising knowledge of Sexual Reproductive Health is an added advantage
