Position title: Environmental Education Officer – Natural Resource Management (NRM)

Working with: Deputy Program Director, NRM Program and Operation staff
Program / Duty station: Bosaso, Bari region, and with frequent travel to Sanaag, Sool and Mudug regions of Puntland
Duration: 1 year (Renewable)

Position Summary: Environmental education officer is involved in making people aware of environmental issues, promoting conservation and sustainability, and enhancing the public’s enjoyment of the environment through teaching and interpreting the natural world.

He/she will work within communities to inform and promote environmental awareness with talks, presentations, guided walks and workshops.

Position Purpose
The range of activities carried out in this role involves
  • Working mainly with local schools educational institutions.
  • Giving talks and taking part in developing projects.
  • Delivering presentations in schools, or host groups at relevant sites, such as nature reserves.
Specific Roles and Responsibilities
  • Researching and developing educational programs and resources for schools, adults, families, community groups or visitors to sites of special environmental interest.
  • promoting educational programs and resources to the target audience through leaflets, websites and newsletters;
  • Liaising with colleagues, teachers and community groups on the design and delivery of educational programs.
  • Giving talks in schools or to community groups on environmental issues.
  • Teaching groups and interpreting the natural environment for them on-site by leading guided walks and answering questions.
  • Translate the feedback from community trainers and other paper-work prior to review by Project Director/Deputy Program Director; as well if necessary support oral translations from external supports for PROWOPP to communities and community trainers.
  • Prepare monthly reports tracking program reports from the program Team to Project Manager. This includes standardizing format and vocabulary. Ensure a high, professional quality to reports in terms of format and English. Be pro-active in securing these reports;
  • Compile comprehensive training activities reports and narrative reports from field program team during the curriculum training, community mobilizations and community sensitization meeting.
  • Read and develop a clear understanding of Adeso Community Development methodologies. Advise supervisor on areas of improvement;
  • Plan the project activities for the field in light of established objectives.
  • Responsible for the monitoring of implementing Curriculum trainings in the field and making sure Community Trainers are efficiently training participants.
  • Organizing events and activities to raise awareness of environmental issues.
  • Training others, such as teachers, in the use of resources and in delivering educational sessions.
  • Researching and collating educational materials and resources on environmental education
  • Managing other members of staff.
  • Acting as a point of contact for teachers, educationalists and colleagues, responding to requests for information on educational issues.
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of programs and writing reports for the organization or funding bodies.
  • Managing budgets for projects and educational programs.
  • Carrying out risk assessments, particularly for outdoor activities.
  • Recruiting, supervising and working with volunteers.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in social sciences or relevant undergraduate course.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in an NGO setting;
  • Must be able to work independently and show initiative;
  • Strong computer (MS Office), filing, and organizational skills; Advance knowledge of written and spoken English is essential;
  • Ability to translate letters, reports and meetings as required.
  • Proven ability to provide oral and written translation from Somali Language to English and vice versa.
  • Willingness to travel throughout the project areas in the area in Somalia
  • Demonstrable experience and competencies in research, monitoring and evaluation for INGOs, UN agencies and/or donor programs;
  • Sound understanding of indicators, data collection methodology, data quality issues; ability to develop indicators and data collection tools and assess data quality;
  • Good interpersonal skills as well as networking, flexibility and innovativeness
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish working relations with target communities and project team.
