Declaration of Vacancies

Pursuant to Section 27 (1), 7(2) & 7(3) of the Media Council Act 2013, the Cabinet Secretary for Information Communications and Technology hereby declares vacancies in the position of the Chairperson and members of the Complaints Commission and invites applications from suitably qualified persons for the positions of Chairperson and Members of the Complaints Commission.

The powers and functions of the Complaints Commission (Chairperson and Members) are as stipulated in Sections 30, 31, 32, 33, 38 and 43 of the Act.

Under Section 28 (1) the Complaints Commission shall consist of:-

a) A Chairperson who shall be a person who holds or has held a judicial office in Kenya or who is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya of not less than ten years standing.

b) Six other persons with knowledge and experience in any one of the following areas:-

(i) Journalism;

(ii) Media policy and law;

(iii) Business practice and finance;

(iv) The performing arts or entertainment;

(v) Advertising practice; or

(vi) Related social sciences.
 

B. Terms of Service

The chairperson and members of the Commission shall hold office for a period of three (3) years and shall be eligible for re-appointment subject to a maximum of two terms.
 

C. How to Apply

(a) Each application should be accompanied by a detailed curriculum vitae, copies of relevant academic and professional certificates, testimonials and other relevant supporting documents. Scanned copies of these documents must accompany any online application.

(b) A copy of the National Identity Card/Passport should be appended.

(c) All applications should be clearly marked “Application for position of Chairperson, Complaints Commission” OR “Application for position of Member of the Complaints Commission” and submitted in any ONE of the following ways:

Note:

(i) The names of all applicants will be published on the website of the Ministry of Information Communications and Technology: www.information.go.ke and under section 7 (7) of the Act in the Gazette and at least two daily newspapers of national circulation.

(ii) Shortlisted applicants will be required to obtain clearance from the following bodies.

All applications should be received on or before 5.00 p.m. on or before 24th January, 2014.
