M-KOPA is seeking: Data Scientist – Credit

Location: Nairobi

Position Start: As Soon As Possible

Reporting to: Head of Business Intelligence

Overall Purpose: The Data Scientist will support M-KOPA’s Credit department in analyzing, predicting, and improving our credit portfolio. They will design, code, and implement various credit models, including (but not limited to): credit scoring, repayment prediction models, churn drivers analysis, behavioral / psychometric indicators of credit performance, etc.

The position will involve translating complex statistical conclusions into appropriate business language, while also working with key stakeholders to increase the overall sophistication of the business’s ability to interpret data. Methods may include development of predictive models, anomaly detection models, and other data science projects, depending on skills, interest, and demand.

Key Accountabilities for the Data Scientist – Credit Job

• Drive Credit model design, development and implementation in partnership with key stakeholders
• Develop a keen understanding of the business to identify key value drivers and root causes
• Proactively identify, design, and test data-driven hypotheses
• Build company-spanning frameworks and tools for measuring credit performance and evaluating business changes and pilots
• Design and develop predictive models to enable planning and decision-making
• Communicate analysis and drive improved decision making with the broader business in a straight-forward, clear manner
• Train senior business stakeholders on analytic methods, data-driven decision making
• Provide support and mentorship to analysts on various analytic methods

Data Scientist – Credit Job Requirements

• BSc in Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or another quantitative field and/or equivalent experience and independent learning (we are mainly interested in your ability to do the job)
• Technical training in Data Science, Data Analytics, and Data Management preferred
• 4+ years in a role with a similar focus at a cutting-edge, global company; 1+ years as Manager in BI, Analytics, or related field, 2+ years of data experimental design and analysis preferred
• Ability to quickly understand key value drivers in various departments of the business
• Keen business sense and comfort working hand-in-hand with senior executives
• Experience working with large and complex datasets, and combining multiple sources of data (across databases, types, and sources)
• Experience designing and developing A/B tests, predictive models, customer segmentations, and other analytics; data science expertise (e.g., machine learning models) preferred
• Strong visual communication and design skills
• Passion for teamwork and comfort delegating work and key responsibilities
• Passion for developing technical, communication, and data skills both within the team and to the broader business
• Ability to communicate technical details to broader stakeholders
• Advanced SQL, R, Excel required; DAX, Python a plus
• Meticulousness in ensuring error-free, high-quality analyses
