Research Support Services Ltd. (RSS Group) is an independent employee-owned research consulting and institutional strengthening firm established to conduct health, policy, social, agricultural, environmental and development research through innovation, partnership and capacity building, with the aim of promoting evidence based decision making processes.

RSS is currently looking for Team Leader / Principal Investigator on a short term basis to assist in conducting a monitoring, evaluation and learning study in our agriculture portfolio for an upcoming project in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

We are seeking for qualified and self motivated individuals with the following key qualifications;
  • Minimum of  a Masters degree in Crop Science, Plant Science, Agronomy, Agricultural Economics, Agriculture, Agribusiness Management, or Natural Resources Management; with consulting/research experience in the impact evaluation of technological interventions in the seed sector. Advanced degrees(PhD) holders , continuing PhD students or candidates with similar/related work experience in lieu of  will have an added advantage
  • Past experience in conducting surveys and household studies especially within rural small-holder farmer communities with a bias to cereal crop production(maize, sorghum), agricultural value chains , agribusiness management, gender and economic empowerment;
  • Experience in  Monitoring and Evaluation of agriculture based Projects/programmes, preferably in the management and intervention strategies for pests and/or weeds that affect the yield of maize, sorghum or other cereal crops in Eastern Africa;
  • Proven experience in  design using various sampling techniques including Lot Quality Assurance Sampling(LQAS) and stratified sampling for rapid data collection;
  • Experience in design of questionnaires, Key Informant Interviews and FGD guides to collect both qualitative and quantitative data as well as the associated tabulation and analysis plans; Experience in coordinating research and managing field teams with strong supervision and organizational skills;
  • Experience in qualitative and quantitative data collection; and analysis (SPSS,R, Stata, NVivo, ATLAS.ti,);
  • In-depth understanding of Kenya, Uganda and/or Tanzania socio-cultural context, rural and poor communities, ability to access remote and volatile regions; and fluency in English and Kiswahili (preferably a national in any of the three countries);
  • Proven record of ethical conduct including research ethics and references as well as good working relations and experiences with Research Ethics Boards/Committees (preferred) of Kenya, Uganda and/or Tanzania;
  • Project management capability, team player, attention to detail and ability to negotiate with ease.
The recruited team leader shall be expected to carry out the consultancy work for a period of approximately 15 days.
