The Catholic Diocese of Nakuru (CDN) Justice and Peace Programme, wishes to engage a highly motivated and competent Consultant(s) on a short term contract.
The Consultant main aim is to investigate past lessons learned and current peace building needs as formulated by communities in order to context-tailor future peace building initiatives for East Pokot.
The Catholic Justice and Peace Commission (CJPC) of the Diocese of Nakuru in its mission to initiate peace building and conflict transformation processes as well as provides civic education and human rights advocacy, currently is undertaking a peace building and good governance project in East Pokot, Baringo County.
The project itself is meant to tackle the ongoing conflicts between the Pokot and Tugen, as well as the conflicts between the Ilchamus and the Pokot.
 
Objectives: CJPC of the Diocese of Nakuru, working itself in the region, would like to shed more light on what peace building have been like over the past years and what impact peace building initiatives have and had.
  1. Establish the legacy and recent history of peace building in East Pokot. This includes investigating the peace building approaches that have been used so far.
  2. In retrospective, expose opinions and views of communities on peace building processes and initiatives that were implemented so far. What do they perceive as successful or a failure?
  3. Stock-taking of major peace building actors in East Pokot – in the past and today.
  4. Investigate the perceptions and views of communities on specific peace building needs on the ground. What do communities define as essentials for peace building in East Pokot?
  5. What is the current conflict situation and process in East Pokot, Baringo County?
Outputs / Deliverables
The key deliverables of the consultancy will include
a) Study work plan, methodology including tools and a draft report including preliminary findings.
b) Overall report of the study with documented data (data bank), analysis and recommendations tackling above objectives.
Time frame and work plan: The study will be carried out over a period of 25 working days between April and May 2016.
The lead consultant will be responsible for delivering results within the specified period. The study outputs should be delivered at the end of 25 days.
The work will be carried out under the supervision of the CJPC.
 Experience and Qualifications
  • Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of peace building issues and challenges in Kenya and specifically in Pastoralist communities;
  • Proven capacity to conduct research and in research methodology
  • At least 3 years of practical experience in design and conducting study and research on peacebuilding issues in the context of Pastoralist communities
  • Thorough understanding of research methodology;
  • Strong understanding of community led development initiatives and participative approach;
  • Good communications skills and fluency in Kiswahili and English with a strong report writing ability
  • University degree in sociology, anthropology, peace and conflict prevention or other relevant field
