Purpose: Marie Stopes Kenya (MSK) seeks a Donor Compliance and New Business Development Advisor to help secure new donor funding, monitor progress of existing grants, lead improvements in grant management, write donor reports and ensure ultimate success of all donor funded projects. 
The post offers the opportunity to develop in- country and international fund raising strategies, design and manage new programmes, develop first class proposals and budgets, and build organizational capacity to deliver excellent service to donors. 

MSK seeks a talented individual with proven skills and experience in proposal writing, securing new funding, managing complex budgets and projects with excellent attention to detail.

 

This position is ideal for someone with prior experience in an international non-profit organization and/or donor relations.

Key Responsibilities and Measures

New Business Development

  • Identifying and successfully capitalising on funding opportunities with major funders of local and international sexual and reproductive health programming.
  • Research and analyse donor calls for funding applications including tenders, expressions of interest and requests for proposals. This includes identifying funding opportunities for MSK – either as a prime or subcontractor.
  • Develop and write successful, high quality funding proposals and budgets as agreed by the Country Management Team (CMT)
  • Develop partnerships with external institutions working on reproductive health to meet and share best practices
Measures
  • Successful proposals (in 2016, one new donor secured and funding secured for MSK outreach programme)
  • 360 feedback
Donor Compliance
  • Monitor project performance to ensure projects are on track against KPIs. This includes monitoring project deliverables, budgets, spend against budget, and appropriate coding and cost recovery against each grant and raising any areas of concern to the Director(s)
  • Maintain a dotted line to relevant finance staff and keep overall responsibility for spend against donor grants
  • Lead quarterly forecasting meetings for all donor projects with appropriate staff involved
  • Manage project start up meetings and briefing
  • Participate in donor meetings as required
  • Be familiar with relevant donor regulations and rules, as well as MSK policies and procedures, and ensure project implementation is compliant with these regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Ensure quality of donor reports and timeliness of submissions
  • Prepare for donor visits, creating agendas, briefing teams and creating briefing packs for visitors
Measures
  • Projects meeting KPIs and quality assurance measures
  • Direct costs recovered
  • No significant under or overspend on donor projects
  • Project leads supported to meet their OGSMs
  • All donor reports submitted on time and of high quality
Monitoring and Evaluation
  • Line manage Monitoring and Evaluation Manager in the MSK support office
  • Provide high level quality assurance on donor reports before submission
  • Present key management and performance information to CMT each month
  • Ensure that all management information is up to date
  • Support the RME manager in creating the Research Agenda for approval by CMT
  • Oversee management of routine data collection processes, routine research (such as Client Exit interview and Mystery Client Studies) and one-off studies as agreed in research agenda
  • Oversee monitoring and evaluation initiatives such as CLIC roll out to outreach and issue guidance to teams on data quality
Measures
  • Annual research agenda approved by CMT
  • Research Agenda implemented
  • Management information accurate and timely
Skills and Experience
Qualifications:
  • Educated to Degree level (Graduate degree preferable)
Experience:
  • Demonstrated 5+ years’ experience in managing large donor grants or a multimillion dollar grant portfolio, as a Grant Manager or Compliance Manager.
  • Experience in designing or implementing monitoring and evaluation activities
  • Demonstrated success in raising multi-million dollar grants from bilateral donors, including leading on proposal processes and building donor relationships
  • Experience as a line manager including performance management
  • Experience in leading on financial forecasting exercises
  • Experience in writing donor reports for large grants, including narrative and result matrices
  • Experience in Marie Stopes Systems and processes (desirable)
  • Experience in reproductive health programming (desirable)
Skills:
  • Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Office package
  • Ability to design, implement and monitor effective project cycle management and monitoring and evaluation best practice
  • Analytical ability and a creative thinker
  • Understanding of, and ability to write and edit donor proposals and reports
  • Fluency in both written and spoken English, with exceptional writing and presentation skills
  • Ability to work well with others in a team environment
  • Ability to manage a very heavy and fluctuating workload
