Vacancy: Managing Director

University of Nairobi Enterprises and Services (UNES) Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary company of the University of Nairobi. 

Among other things, UNES was formed to: harness the resources of the University of Nairobi with a view to enhancing the University’s core functions which include coordinating and provide managerial services for income generating activities within the University; undertake consultancy, production and provide the required managerial services for the same.
 

 

The Managing Director (MD) is the Chief Executive Officer of the Company, providing leadership and direction to the UNES management team. 
Reporting to the UNES Board of Directors, the ideal candidate will be responsible for providing principled leadership consistent with the UNES vision, mission and values and expected to provide exemplary leadership in the attainment of a high performing environment. 
UNES is now seeking the services of an outstanding person to be the MD.

Functions
  1. Create Strategy to ensure a sustained economic value driven business; interpret and implement the corporate strategies in accordance with the vision, mission and mandate of the company; develop and ensure sustainability of profitable business areas;
  2. Identify, establish, promote and maintain strategic links with internal stakeholders, and in particular, with academic members of staff responsible for income generating units;
  3. Establish, promote and maintain strategic commercial links with external stakeholders especially the business community; establish and maintain strong relationships with high ranking Government Officials;
  4. Ensure efficient utilization of Company Resources including attraction and retention of staff, systems and infrastructure; excellent leadership and people management skills; sound decision-making and judgment capabilities; Problem solving and analytical skills;
  5. Ensure effective communication between the Board of Directors, the University and the Government of Kenya;
  6. Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Board of Directors on behalf of University of Nairobi Council.
The Person: We are looking for an energetic, innovative and creative individual who has a good record of at least 10 or more years in a general management/leadership role in large institutions.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • A Postgraduate Degree, preferably in Management, from a recognized University, and be at the level of, or appointable to the position of Senior Management in the University;
  • Have a good track record of working within the academic environment of a university, and hands on experience on income generating activities;
  • A very good understanding of corporate governance and management in the Parastatal Sector;
  • Must demonstrate high level capacity, to establish, develop, broaden, diversify and implement long-term business strategies of the company’s business portfolio;
  • Must be a good planner, organizer and excellent decision maker;
  • Must have excellent strategic, analytical, negotiation, interpersonal and communication skills; and
  • A team player able to provide effective leadership to management and bridging to the Board of Directors.
Remuneration: In view of the demanding nature of this job, an attractive remuneration package will be given to the successful candidate.
