Job Title: Director, Africa Risk Management

Reports To: Director, Global Risk Management

General Summary: This is senior position within Pax Mondial’s Africa business and requires director-level performance and competencies in the areas of project management, technical capacity, new business development, and management and leadership.

The Director will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Risk Management services business unit in Sub-Saharan Africa as well as working with the Director of Global Risk Management and Corporate HQ on strategic level initiatives across the region.

The Director will also be responsible for developing new business across the region and cross selling Pax Mondial service offerings with new and existing clients. This position will manage one direct report, the Operations Coordinator, and several subcontractors.
 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
 
Management and Leadership
  • Manage and oversee day-to-day operations of risk management services being delivered throughout the East Africa region.
  • Manage Africa Risk Management business unit’s relationships with external clients, vendors, partners, and consultants in order to enhance Pax Mondial’s reputation with each group.
  • Promote maturity, dependability, integrity, and initiative at all levels within the company.
  • Direct risk management services operations and conceptualizes new strategies to improve unit performance in areas of operation in East Africa.
  • Responsibilities may include: staffing, work planning, budgeting, financial management, quality assurance and quality control, and performance reporting.
  • Deliver effective oral and written communication with Corporate HQ and other Pax Mondial business unit leaders as required.
  • Recommend and/or lead strategic staff recruitment.
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate direct report staff, communicating clear performance goals and standards, offering regular performance feedback and prompt resolution of problems, and time and opportunity to grow and develop in key competency areas.
  • Promote staff development through coaching, mentoring, and facilitating professional growth opportunities.
  • Create a productive and motivating work environment for staff by establishing and maintaining partnerships across departments, staying abreast of management, leadership, and team building strategies and advocating for them within Pax Mondial.
Technical Capacity
  • Director will demonstrate a sound understanding of international risk management and security best practices.
  • Familiarity with Oil and Gas, Mining and Extractives, and/or Large Scale Infrastructure Development industries in East Africa preferred.
  • Familiarity with USAID, USG, DoD, DoS, risk management technical capabilities a plus.
  • Participate in internal or external professional associations and represent company at conferences, events, and industry meetings as needed.
  • Make presentations and train staff as needed, including through one-on-one mentoring; small group trainings; corporate training programs; and information dissemination.
  • Liaise and provide general coordination with other departments, units, partners, and individuals on joint planning and activities, including Risk Management, ExMed, MAT Mondial, CLSS.
  • Interpret and advise staff on risk management and security related matters.
  • Knowledge of quality standards in risk management operations. Formulates interdisciplinary approaches and advises internal and external clients on technical trends and programming priorities.
  • Participate in activities to build a strong knowledge culture by sharing best practices and important innovations through practice networks and knowledge management systems.
  • Identify, vet, train and manage new vendors, suppliers, subcontractors and commercial partners.
Project Management
  • Work proactively and productively with internal employees to develop mutual understanding of goals and objectives for business unit success.
  • Lead in problem solving and respond immediately to crisis situations, developing solutions that meet client needs.
  • Oversee client engagements to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budgetary requirements.
  • Interpret data and develops strategies to achieve targets and anticipate changes in market conditions.
  • Recommend strategies to streamline systems for effectiveness and efficiency, considering client needs, team dynamics, and division and corporate mission.
  • Serve as a quality control and assurance officer for guidance and outputs to ensure consistently high standards.
New Business Development
  • Develop relationships with new and existing clients with a purpose of generating new business leads and opportunities in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Attend networking functions and conferences to strengthen business relationships.
  • Support and develop technical proposals for USAID, USG, OTI, DFID, O&G, and Commercial clients as required, in collaboration with Corporate HQ personnel.
  • Work directly with Business Development team analyze target market segments and collaboratively develop strategies to capture new business and market share.
  • Respond to existing clients’ needs and look for ways to cross or up-sell products to make client operations more efficient and effective.
  • Conceptualize and develop tools, guidelines, and training materials consistent with corporate policies and best practices for new business development efforts.
  • Provide vision and leadership in new business development activities, including appropriate proposal team roles.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities
  • The Director will perform other duties and responsibilities as required by the Director, Global Risk Management or VP of Business Management which might include administrative, management, and technical tasks as well as working on special task forces.
Qualifications and Competencies
  • Minimum 10 years of technically relevant work experience. Preferably with 3-5 years working in East Africa.
  • Must demonstrate subject matter expertise in risk management and security disciplines.
  • Knowledge of EDD/EOD and/or construction industries a plus
  • Recent and relevant working knowledge of risk management/security industries in East Africa is critical.
  • Ability to solve complex technical, managerial or operational problems and evaluate options based on relevant information, resources, well-rounded experience, and knowledge.
  • Ability to operate at director level and manage significant activities, budgets and resources to produce and take responsibility for results.
  • Experience living or working in developing countries.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing, lead presentations, training courses, and effective meetings.
  • Strong knowledge of MS Office applications.
  • Detail oriented with ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and supervise department staff, multiple project teams, and other initiatives.
  • Demonstrated integrity, independent thinking, judgment, and respect for others.
  • Must be willing to travel domestic/international up to 40% of the time.
  • Relocation will be considered on a case by case basis
Education Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent number of years experience required.
  • Master’s preferred, or equivalent combination of education and work experience in relevant technical competency area.
