Private Sector Innovation Programme for Health (PSP4H)
Position: Short Term Marketing Strategy Expert
Location: Nairobi, Kenya, with possible in-country travel

Background: Cardno Emerging Markets (East Africa) is implementing the Private Sector Innovation Programme for Health (PSP4H), an innovative action research project funded by DFID Kenya. 
The purpose of the programme is to explore the markets in which poor people pay for-profit providers and shop-keepers for healthcare, a new area for development assistance. 
PSP4H utilizes a market systems technical approach called Making Markets Work for the Poor (M4P) and is mandated to share lessons learned on the validity of this method to design pro-poor health interventions. 

Unlike many other development programmes, PSP4H does not give grants or otherwise intervene directly in markets; it is a technical assistance programme that offers research, consulting advice, and capacity building to its partners to catalyse systemic change.

Purpose of the Position: PSP4H seeks a Short Term Marketing Strategy Expert to work within the programme on an as-needed basis to help develop practical, implementable marketing strategies, marketing plans, and marketing and communications programmes for PSP4H intervention partners. 
Intervention partners are from the private sector and typically range from networks of health care practitioners to small and medium enterprises.
Scope of Work
Working closely with PSP4H technical staff and partner management, the Short Term Marketing Strategy Expert shall, as required:
  • Conduct marketing and communications needs assessments and gap analyses, including but not limited to topics such as product line, pricing, positioning, differentiation, branding and identity, segmentation, customer identification and targeting, sales, distribution and communications channels;
  • Develop customized marketing strategies, marketing plans, and marketing and communications programmes for the partner;
  • Develop marketing and communications materials, including branding and identity manuals;
  • Deliver short trainings on implementation of marketing programmes and use of materials ; and
  • Follow up and assess outcomes of implementation.
Specific assignments are based on the needs of PSP4H and its intervention partners and typically range from 10 to 30 days in duration. 
Each assignment will have specific terms of reference.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • University degree in marketing, business, management, or a related topic. MBA or PhD an advantage;
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in marketing, sales, communications, or consulting in the private sector;
  • Practical understanding of a broad range of business topics, particularly for SMEs in Kenya;
  • Experience in or understanding of the private healthcare sector an advantage;
  • Excellent writing and IT skills, ability to use Microsoft Office to create clear, well-formatted documents; and
  • Excellent verbal communications skills in English.
This position is scoped for Kenyan nationals; candidates of other nationalities will be considered under the condition that the candidate has the right to work in Kenya.
