Duties and Responsibilities

The Executive Director is a dynamic leader who ensures the achievement of VSF-Suisse’s vision, strategy and goals and who guides the organisation’s further development.
In close collaboration and under the supervision of the Executive Committee and the Board, he/she leads the head office in Berne, in Switzerland and the VSF-Suisse country offices in currently six countries in Africa.
  • Overall leadership and responsibility for the organisation
  • Contribution to the further development of the strategy of VSF-Suisse and responsibility for its implementation
  • Development and implementation of a yearly organisational plan
  • Supervision and guidance of the programmatic and project work
  • In close collaboration with the Programme Managers in Berne and the Country Coordinators in the field, identification and planning of new projects
  • In close collaboration with the Programme Managers in Berne and the Country Coordinators in the field, mobilisation and allocation of financial resources in the most efficient and effective manner
  • Overall financial responsibility: Development of and compliance with the organisation’s annual budget, monitoring of the accountancy and the cash flow and control of the monthly and annual financial closures
  • Lead and coordination of a team of 4-6 collaborators at head office and approximately 100 collaborators in the field
  • Strengthening of internal communication and promotion of dialogue between the Board, Executive Committee, head office and the country offices
  • Representation of the organization with donors, partners and the general public
  • Development of partnerships and networking, coordination with other stakeholders
Requirements
  • S/he has long-term experience in the management and leadership of an NGO, sound knowledge in the field of humanitarian aid and development cooperation and a strong ability to communicate and network with collaborators, partners, donors and the general public.
  • University degree in political, social, environmental or agricultural science or any other relevant field, preferably with further training in management
  • Seven to ten years experience in the management of an NGO
  • Proven experience in organisational development, change and/or crisis management
  • – Advanced skills in human resources management and development
  • – Proven ability in financial management (budget control, financial and cash flow planning and control)
  • – Facility in communicating and negotiating with institutional and private donors (UN, EU, SDC)
  • – Comprehensive knowledge and experience in planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating humanitarian aid and development programmes and projects in areas such as food security, rural development an health preferably in the African context
  • – Intercultural competency and ability to work in a multicultural environment
  • – Willingness to regular business trips
  • – Mother tongue German, French or English with a sound knowledge of the other two languages
  • – Age ideally above 45 years
  • – Swiss work permit
