A nonprofit organization focusing on helping populations in Nairobi through education, community outreach and economic empowerment programmes in order to facilitate sustainable change is seeking to urgently fill the above position.
 
Job Title: Librarian
Reporting to: Senior Administrative Manager
 
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work collaboratively to strategically maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of the community library and ultimately ensure continuous improvement of the project.
  • Oversee 15,000+ volume lending library and manage support staff. 
  • Develop and coordinate programming for educational workshops and events, including guest speakers. Refine and implement library policies and procedures.
  • Develop and maintain convenient, accessible and cost-effective information system for the library.
  • Enter cataloguing and classification data into the library’s automated system and complete cataloguing records where only partial copy is available for all print, audio-visual, electronic and all other resources.
  • Develop and maintain cataloguing procedures, as well as an indexing system and files for the library
  • Prepare reports related to library resources and activities.
  • Ensure an accurate inventory of resources.
  • Conduct ongoing research and evaluation to create a database that will be used to inform continuous improvement of the project, including recommendation of procurement of additional books and materials.
  • Establish processes and procedures for selection, acquisition, circulation, etc. that ensure fair sharing of available resources.
  • Develop and manage an effective internal and external book lending service for all library materials and maintain proper records
  • Ensure efficient retrieval by users.
  • Maintain inventories, compile statistics and generate reports as required.
  • Respond to daily on-site requests for information.
  • Perform other related duties.
Person Specifications
Must be proficient in the following areas:
  • Knowledge of Library policies, procedures, methods, ethics and professional standards
  • Familiar with Library programming standards, information gathering systems and methods; Ability to proficiently manage and operate the Mandarin Library management software; Effective verbal, written, presentation and listening communications skills.
  • The Person must maintain strict confidentiality in performing the duties of the Librarian with high level of integrity and honesty and be able to work under minimum supervision.
  • Diploma in Library and information science from a recognized institution with at least 3 years post qualification work experience in a busy library.
Minimum Academic Qualification: KCSE scored Grade C and above C in Mathematics, English or Kiswahili.
