Vice Chancellor

The Multimedia University of Kenya Council invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced persons with excellent credentials to lead the institution as its first Vice Chancellor.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Vice Chancellor will be the Chief Executive Officer of the University and will be responsible and accountable for the Council’s and Institution’s mandate.
 

The successful candidate will:
  • Provide strategic direction and leadership to the University and represent the University nationally, regionally and internationally;
  • Be the academic and administrative head of the University;
  • Have overall responsibility on the direction, organization and the administration of programs of the University;
  • Coordinate the development and implementation of the academic and administrative policies of the University in accordance with the University’s master plan and the strategic plan;
  • Maintain efficiency and harmony of the University and ensure enforcement of the statutes and regulations;
  • Provide innovative and creative leadership in the areas of Academics, Finance, Planning and Development; general administration; research and partnerships;
  • Play a key role in the facilitation and maintenance of linkages with government/regulatory agencies and other local/international institutions of higher learning.
Requirements

Applicants should meet the following requirements:-

  • Be a holder of an earned PhD from a recognized university, and should be a Full Professor (or Associate Professor of exemplary performance record);
  • Have at least ten (10) years of academic and research experience at senior level and demonstrated leadership skills in an academic and/or research institution (at least 6 years at the level of Associate Professor and above);
  • Should have served substantively with demonstrable results at least as a Principal of a Constituent University College or as a Deputy Vice Chancellor of a university;
  • Should have published in internationally recognized peer reviewed journals, and extensively presented in international conferences;
  • Have good understanding of governance structures, government financial and fiscal policies, strategic planning and vision 2030, human resource management, ICT, procurement and asset disposal legal requirements, further supported by relevant trainings and certificates;
  • Have excellent understanding of the current trends in university education and training in Kenya and globally, and a broad awareness of the factors and conditions shaping the development of university education in Kenya;
  • Be a leader with potential to plan, develop and implement academic programs and develop strategic institutional linkages;
  • Have excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Have demonstrated ability to network, fundraise, mobilize training and research grants that will be central to the development of the university;
  • Be registered with a recognized professional association/body in their profession;
  • Be of highest ethical standards, integrity, accountability and professionalism, teamwork and stewardship, and comply with the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution.
2. Recruitment for Positions of Deputy Vice-Chancellors

2.1 Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs, Research and Innovation)

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Vice Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs, Research and Innovation) will be the Head of the Academic Affairs, Research and Innovation Division and will oversee Academic programmes and Research in the division under the direction and authority of the Vice Chancellor.
Working under the direction and supervision of the Vice-Chancellor the successful applicant shall:-
  • Have the responsibility of coordination and organisation of the Division of Academic Affairs, Research and Innovation.
  • Ensure that the University Senate is properly advised in the development of learning and research programmes in the university in line with university charter and statutes
  • Ensure that the University Senate is properly advised in the development of learning and research programmes in conformity to ethical standards and legally recognized professional bodies.
  • Ensure effective accountability to the Vice-Chancellor for the proper management of the Academic Affairs, Research and Innovation Division.
  • Be responsible for promoting and co-ordinating research, scientific publications, extension and technology transfer to industry and business community.
  • Mobilise and solicit financial support for research and academic programs
  • Strengthen and establish new collaborations and linkages with both local and international institutions of higher learning for academic and research programmes.
  • Coordinate the management of admissions, examinations, postgraduate studies and research
  • Co-ordinate workshops and seminars to enhance linkages, academic, research and innovation standards.
  • Co-ordinate student welfare activities
  • Ensure that research, innovation and outreach departments operate effectively and efficiently in line with the vision and mission of the University
  • Perform any other duties that shall be assigned by the Vice-Chancellor.
Qualifications and Experience
The candidate should possess the following qualifications and experience:-
  • Be a holder of earned PhD degree from a recognized University
  • Be a Full Professor or Associate Professor with at least 8 years of experience in a senior management position such as Dean/Director, Principal of a Campus/Deputy Principal of a University College or leadership in comparable levels, with outstanding results;
  • Be a recognized scholar as evidenced by refereed journals, publications, university level books as well as project grants and awards;
  • Have proven leadership and management experience in a modern university environment;
  • Have ability and leadership skills to effectively co-ordinate learning, innovation and research functions;
  • Have good understanding of governance structures, government financial and fiscal policies, strategic planning and vision 2030, human resource management, ICT, procurement and asset disposal legal requirements, further supported by relevant trainings and certificates;
  • Have proven capacity to promote learning, teaching, research and development in a university;
  • Have excellent understanding of national laws and policies in education, the current trends in university education and training in Kenya and globally, and a broad awareness of the factors and conditions shaping the development of university education in Kenya
  • Have experience in developing and implementing regulations that govern students’ welfare and academic programs in a university
  • Have skills, capacity and determination to initiate and sustain linkages and networks for the promotion of scholarship.
  • Have demonstrated ability to network, fundraise, mobilize training and research grants that will be central to the development of the university;
  • Be registered with a recognized professional association/body in their profession
  • Be of highest ethical standards, integrity, accountability and professionalism, teamwork and stewardship, and comply with the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution.
2.2 Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration, Finance and Planning)

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Vice Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration, Finance and Planning) will be the Head of the Administration, Finance and Planning Division and will oversee the Administration and Planning activities under the direction and authority of the Vice Chancellor.

Working under the direction and supervision of the Vice-Chancellor the successful applicant shall:-

  • Have the responsibility of coordination and organisation of the Division of Administration, Finance and Planning.
  • Be responsible to the Vice-Chancellor for the general conduct and discipline of staff.
  • Ensure that the University Management is properly and promptly advised to comply with all statutory and legal requirements currently in force.
  • Ensure effective accountability to the Vice-Chancellor for the proper management of the Administration, Finance and Planning Division
  • Ensure sound financial controls.
  • Mobilise and solicit financial support for the university
  • Be responsible for coordinating the timely preparation of the University’s budget estimates and operational budget.
  • Co-ordinate staff welfare activities
  • Perform any other duties that shall be assigned by the Vice-Chancellor.
Qualifications and Experience
The candidate should possess the following qualifications and experience:
  • Be a holder of earned PhD degree from a recognized University

  • Be conversant with human resource management, financial planning and accounting as demonstrated by professional or similar qualifications;
  • Have proven capacity to promote learning, teaching, research and development in a university;
  • Have skills, capacity and determination to initiate and sustain linkages and networks for the promotion of scholarship.
  • Have demonstrated ability to network, fundraise, and mobilize grants that will be central to the development of the university;
  • Be registered with a recognized professional association/body in their profession
  • Be of highest ethical standards, integrity, accountability and professionalism, teamwork and stewardship, and comply with the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution.
Terms and Conditions of Service
Successful candidates will be offered competitive remuneration package including house allowance and other benefits in accordance with the Kenya Government Public Service Guidelines.
The appointment will be for a contractual period of five (5) years renewable for a further period of five (5) years through a competitive process or otherwise as per the Statutes and Universities Act.
