TechnoServe works with enterprising people in the developing world to build competitive farms, businesses and industries.

We are a nonprofit organization that develops business solutions to poverty by linking people to information, capital and markets.

Our work is rooted in the idea that given the opportunity, hardworking men and women in even the poorest places can generate income, jobs and wealth for their families and communities. With more than four decades of proven results, we believe in the power of private enterprise to transform lives.

We are supporting the implementation of the Kenya Market Assistance Program (MAP), which is the UK Department for International Development (DFID’s) program for promoting employment and income generation in selected market systems in Kenya.

MAP’s goal is to improve the efficiency and performance of selected market systems that are important for poor people, by addressing systemic constraints.
MAP employs the making markets work for the poor (M4P) approach, which DFID has used to produce results in most of its private sector development work.

TechnoServe has been contracted by MAP to develop and implement the program’s dairy sector strategy, targeting to improve smallholder farmers productivity through improved feed, breed and veterinary services as well as increasing milk sales through more effective supply chain management.

MAP expects that the impact of its dairy strategy will be felt across Kenya’s wider population of 1.6 million smallholder dairy farmers.
To address the underlying issues affecting small holder farmers’ access to improved breed and animal health services, TechnoServe proposes to review the existing liquid nitrogen distribution models by leading producers and traders.
Secondly, TechnoServe seeks to stimulate a commercial fodder and concentrate feeds market to support farmers maximize the returns from their herds’ genetic potential by working with, research institutions, certified feed labs, hay and concentrate feed manufactures to improve diet formulation strategies based on basal diets of hay (Red Oat, Boma Rhodes and Star Grass) and locally available feed supplements.

TechnoServe plans to engage the services of a short term consultant to work with the MAP dairy team, to draw two terms of reference (TOR) targeting leading dairy industry consultants.

The short term consultant will work with the Technoserve Dairy team to develop pre-feasibility studies that will support the content development of the TORs.
Therefore, the scopes of work objectives are to produce two TORs for the Agribusiness Development Program /Kenya Market Assistance Program (MAP).
These are TORs for;
  • Developing liquid nitrogen distribution strategies for freezing genetic materials and animal health resources in Kenya
  • Developing feed rationing strategies for improving dairy productivity by small holder farmers in Kenya, based on basal diets of hay
