Bookshop Manager
Summary Statement

The Bookshop Manager is responsible for the procurement of merchandise for resale, marketing and administering of the bookshop and providing supervision and leadership to bookshop staff.
The incumbent, working within a customer service oriented environment, is expected to be innovative and creative in researching, developing and recommending business solutions.
Using effective communication, problem-solving and leadership skills the incumbent manages the operations of the bookshop in keeping with CDN values and competencies by developing and maintaining positive working relationships with all contacts internal and external to CDN.

Relationships:

Reports to: Financial Administrator

Subordinate staff: Bookshop assistants- Sales Assistants, Accountant

Other internal contacts: CDN programmes and institutions

External contacts: Publishers & Sales Representatives, General Public

Major Responsibilities / Duties

  • Procuring merchandise for resale.
  • Maintain inventory control for all merchandise.
  • Conduct research on new or required items for resale.
  • Control merchandise receipt, inventory and pricing.
  • Monitor sales figures and margins to ensure budget targets are met.
Marketing and administration of Bookshop operations
  • Prepares and completes annual inventory.
  • Develop and implement annual marketing plans.
  • Evaluate marketing plan effectiveness on an event or annual basis.
  • Directs the stores layout and design for merchandising of products.
  • Good working knowledge of Bookshop computer management systems.
  • Able to open and close the store and complete the month end processes and back ups.
  • Maintain merchandise data base.
  • Resolves problems related to the operation of Point of Sale (POS) system.
Supervision and Leadership
  • Assumes full responsibility of the Bookshop.
  • Supervise day – to-day activities of staff in accordance with Human Resource policies and procedures.
  • Plan, organize and coordinate formal orientation and training of employees under direct supervision.
  • Conduct performance enhancement process in accordance with standard practice and collective agreements.
  • Manage personnel issues that arise between performance planning activities.
  • Manage and allocate workload when necessary and help define priorities.
  • Provide leadership by disseminating information, providing feedback, advising, and coaching.

Qualifications/Experience
  • A Diploma in business administration.
  • A degree in Business administration will be an added advantage.
  • Qualification in purchasing procedures and sources for books, school supplies and other merchandize sold in a bookshop.
  • Two years experience working in a busy bookshop.
  • Strong ability to effectively plan and organize retail operations to meet operational objectives in accordance with CDN goals.
  • Remarkable ability to perform consistently under the pressure of deadlines and other administrative demands.
  • In-depth ability to work cooperatively with others.
