Islamic Relief is an international NGO, established in 1984 in the UK, seeking to promote sustainable Economic and social development by working with local communities through relief and developmental activities. We aim to help the needy regardless of Race, Religion, Colour and Gender. 
Islamic Relief is currently running Programmes in several sectors that include Education, Health & Nutrition, Water & Sanitation, Livelihoods Support and Child Welfare. 
IRW also implements seasonal Food Security Programmes including the Ramadan Food Distribution and Qurbani.

Vacancy: Regional Content Curator / Producer

Base Location: IRW East Africa Regional Office, Nairobi, Kenya with extensive travel across regions and to the IO

Reporting To: IRW Brand Manager (Birmingham, UK) and East Africa Regional Director (Nairobi) day-to-day

Purpose of Division / Office: The Communications Division is responsible for the marketing, brand and global voice for Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW). 

Supporting and serving the Islamic Relief Family, it collects, coordinates and delivers compelling content and messaging from the field for use, on digital platforms, print publications, public relations in support of the organisation’s vision, mission and global strategy.

IRW is an international relief and development charity, which envisages a caring world where people unite to respond to the suffering of others, empowering them to fulfil their potential. Islamic Relief is an independent Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) founded in the UK in 1984.

Job Purpose:

The Regional Content Curator / Producer is responsible for providing compelling video and photographic content for the IRW Family, successfully providing both finished content for maximum exposure of the organisation’s great work around the world. 

The Curator / Producer is expected to prioritise the East Africa region in line with the regionalisation exercise, and provide support for regional content around the world. 
This in turn fuels compelling fundraising and advocacy campaigns through IR’s various global entities.

The Curator / Producer is responsible for creating content briefs for producing compelling written, video and photographic collateral to serve the needs of the Family. 

This includes but is not limited to collecting and capturing the success stories of the transformative impact of IRW’s work.  
The role is field-based – 75% of the time will be spent travelling internationally – the role will involve close liaison with the various chapters of the International Programmes Division. 
Ultimately the barometer of success will be the timely capture of case studies demonstrating how donors’ money is being utilised to benefit those in need – both in the immediate aftermath of natural disasters as well as long term development projects.

Moreover, the Curator / Producer:

  • Oversees the gathering of all marketing and media collateral through a network of citizen journalists (regional desk staff, field staff & aid workers, volunteers and where necessary – freelancers)
  • Work independently to film, photo and edit visual and audio content to professional standards when resources or time-scales are tight and/or a project needs special attention
  • Continuously looking for new, creative and cost effective ways to produce compelling content for a range of multi-media platforms
  • Gathering and utilizing visual and audio collateral which is hidden in the inner recesses of the field offices
  • Support the Comms Division in acting on requests for collateral
  • Harnesses feedback from across the Family, with an unstinting drive to continuously adapt and improve the steady stream of material being produced.

Key Working Relationships
  • Day-to-day engagement with International Programmes representatives (inclusive of desks, humanitarian department, orphan/child welfare department)

  • Regular engagement with different programming staff, aid workers, volunteers across the regions, to capture and curate their first person accounts of the great work they do

Scope and Authority

Scope of the Role: The role is fully responsible for delivering on creative briefs set out primarily by the Brand Manager (editorial, video and photography) to the Family as a whole. The role formally sits as part of the East Africa Regional Office and reports to the Regional Director day-to-day, matrix-managed by the IRW Brand Manager of the Comms Division who provides technical/marketing leadership. 

The Curator / Producer work closely with programme managers across the four regions; and travels extensively throughout the globe instigating video/photographic chronicling of case study material that can be used in marketing material.

Responsibility for Resources:
In addition to a marketing budget, the individual is responsible for the organisation of the collateral and intellectual property produced and archived and responsible for hire, safeguarding and maintenance of all technical equipment. Based on available resources s/he is responsible for ensuring multimedia outputs to the highest possible quality.

Key Accountabilities

The jobholder is accountable for fulfilling his or her roles and responsibilities in line with Islamic Relief’s values and principles of fairness, humanity, honesty, respect and fair treatment of their colleagues and staff.

The jobholder will report to the IRW Brand Manager regularly, on the basis of annually defined key performance indicators (KPIs).

Area One: lead on collecting, shaping and developing compelling multiplatform offline and online collateral to serve the needs of the Family (IRW, partners and regional office itself); this should bear witness to the experience of the vulnerable and poor and confidently demonstrate the impact that IR makes – empowering staff, supporters and external stakeholders alike to take action (priority East Africa, support for regions)

  • Work closely with field-office programming staff to ensure all the powerful stories of the work that IR does is being chronicled with the powerful medium of video and photography
  • By definition the role will require exceptional leadership and project management in the form of writing clear briefs and overseeing video production and/or photography across multiple territories
  • Responsible for creating a wide network of ‘citizen video/photo journalists’ across the regions consisting of regional desk officers, aid workers, volunteers and where necessary – freelancers
  • Regularly train field staff will ensure standards are continuously improving with the goal of reflecting global best practice
  • Develop a considered video/photography strategy based on continuous briefings from the regional desk officers
  • Ensure effective contingency mechanisms are in place during humanitarian relief situations to guarantee continuous reportage from the site of the natural disasters
  • Meet the ever-evolving content needs of the Family, both proactively through a formal briefing process and in response to immediate needs
  • Harnesses feedback from across the Family, with a drive for continuous improvement
  • Where voids exist, develop a roster of freelancers who have the capacity to support the Family in a cost-effective fashion
  • When resources or time-scales are tight and/or a project needs special attention, work independently to film, photo and edit visual and audio content to professional standards
  • Utilise Digital Asset Management System for content upload for use by the Family
  • Provide direct service as required to the marketing needs of the Family

  • Strengthen creative work by actively engaging and networking with the wider humanitarian and development community as well as the wider creative industry

  • Supporting the Family with strategic direction, timely reports and technical advice in the field of marketing video/photo collateral development
  • Provide support as may be required to IRW Public Relations IRW Brand Management
  • Contribute to Family-wide decision-making and continuous learning, change and improvement processes, and implementation of the organisational and divisional strategy

Person Specification
 
Experience
  • Technical experience of the following, to a high-standard in a corporation or NGO:
  1. Copywriting in English
  2. Videography including corporate videos, tv commercials, infomercials
  3. Corporate/Commercial Photography
  4. Project Management – especially adept at dealing with evolving situations
  5. Managing a team of field-based videographers, photographers and/or journalists 
  • Sound portfolio of media-related work
  • Experience of managing and producing creative in a corporation or in an NGO, within multiple geographies and environments
  • Significant experience of all elements of the video and photo production process – creative briefing, storyboarding, pre-production, post production
  • Experiencing in meeting customer demands to high-standards
  • Experience in managing large teams including creatives and freelancers
  • Proven record as a multimedia journalist or writer, operating within a management team
  • Experience and background in a leading marketing organisation
  • Experience in collaboration and coordination which lead to positive relationships with internal actors and external bodies
  • Experience in utilising Digital Asset Management tools
  • Experience of working in teams that are high-performing with a clear innovative direction
  • A track record in project management with experience of working with limited financial resources
