The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.

Through the Water and Sanitation programmes, UN-Habitat provides both policy, technical, and financial support to governments and local authorities, thus contributing to the achievement of the internationally agreed Sustainable development goals as well as the implementation of the New Urban Agenda. The water and sanitation unit has different programmes that strive to offer capacity building, improve sanitation and access to safe clean water to communities thus reducing massive pollution and contamination of the available water resources.

The UN-Habitat Public Information multimedia (videographer) internship is for 6 months.

Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the direct supervision of the Lead, Water and Sanitation Unit,the intern will:

  • Assist in filming and editing videos, photos and photo editing on water and sanitation work.
  • Help design and prepare various information materials and publications.
  • Provide assistance in preparing the multimedia public information materials for water and sanitation, energy, waste water and mobility, including presentation, slide shows and video production as well as social media pieces.
  • Help initiate contents/feeds for social media channels and explore more potential social media means to raise visibility of water and sanitation work;
  • Provide assistance in editing and creating film videos, if required.
  • Provide assistance in creating and enhancing photo library.
  • Help prepare captions as well as upload and download the photos to/from photo library.
  • Help take photos of events and workshops, when required.
  • Carry out and/or initiate tasks/special projects.
  • Assist with water and sanitation contributions to UN-Habitat’s website if required.
  • Help prepare articles for UN-Habitat newsletter.
  • Help monitor news clippings from local newspapers on global, regional and national issues.
  • Provide research for backgrounders/information materials.
  • Assist in the organization and execution of special events to mark UN observances, press conferences, media launches or exhibitions.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications.
  • Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views

Preferred Area of Study

  • Journalism, Multimedia, Public Relations, or Communications.
  • Knowledge of Electronic media (Photography, Videography) and Multi media will be an added advantage.

Work Experience

  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of Kiswahili is desirable.
