Anticipated Start Date: October 2017
Organizational Setting: The 2014 Malabo Declaration called on the AU Member States to reduce by 50% current levels of postharvest losses by the year 2025.
This Post harvest loss reduction commitment is part of efforts by AU to help achieve food security targets and end hunger on the African continent by the year 2025.
In response to the PH loss reduction commitment, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the African Union Commission (AUC) and the Rockefeller Foundation (RF) are collaborating on the project: Support to the African Union in the development of policies and strategies for country-specific plans to reduce post-harvest food losses.
As part of a comprehensive process to reduce PH losses to achieve the 2025 goal of 50% loss reduction, the FAO food loss study methodology Food Loss Analysis: Causes and Solutions, Case studies in the Small-scale Agriculture and Fisheries Subsectors which has been used in many countries and studies because of its importance as a tool for reducing food losses, should now be incorporated into curriculum of Agricultural Training Vocational and Extension Training.
This will help develop the capacity of college graduates to manage post-harvest losses.
This position is located within the FAO Representation in Kenya
Reporting Lines: Under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative in Kenya and the Technical Advisor, the Consultant on PHL Training Curriculum incorporation into colleges will in consultation with the PH Technical Working Group and FAO identify two Government registered agricultural colleges or universities and have the FAO Food Loss Study Methodology incorporated into their training curriculum
Tasks and responsibilities
Specifically the Post-harvest Study Curriculum consultant in consultation with FAO, Ministry of Agriculture, AUC and TWG and other key stakeholders will complete the following tasks:
- Review the FAO Food loss methodology and other training material developed from the methodology.
- Adapt and ensure the training material meets requirements of the colleges and the relevant bodies
- Make recommendations to the structure of the training material and have the recommendation if any approved and incorporated
- In collaboration with FAO, TWG, Ministry of Agriculture and the relevant Ministry of Education identify two agricultural colleges and have the FAO Food Loss methodology incorporated into the colleges’ training curriculum.
Expected Outputs:
A report detailing the process and including the following
1. A letter from the college confirming incorporation of the FAO Methodology into the curriculum
2. The training program
3. How the college will develop the capacity to use the FAO methodology.
Required Completion Date: 31 December 2017
Candidates will be assessed against the following
Minimum Requirements
- Advanced university degree in Agricultural Science, Food Science, Food Safety, Post-harvest Management or other related discipline.
- Five years of relevant experience in curriculum development or related field.
- Working knowledge of English
